TRAILER-TOWING TRAINING
Employers have a responsibility under PUWER, the Provision & Use Of Work Equipment Regulations to provide adequate training if employees are required to tow a trailer as part of their employment. See Lantra Award.
Drivers who passed their driving test before 1st January 1997 automatically receive the entitlement to tow a trailer on the road, but employers must still provide adequate training to comply with PUWER.
For those who passed their driving test after 1st January 1997, the law states that they have to pass an additional test to gain the "E" entitlement on their licence. This would allow them to tow a trailer over 750kg (Maximum Authorised Mass) legally on the public highway.
To gain the "E" entitlement a test run by the DSA needs to be passed. This test requires a higher standard of training than the car test, as the test is based from an LGV test station and examiners require it to be completed at LGV level standards.
The Test:
Consists of 5 Main Elements:
- A series of questions need to be answered
- A manoeuvring exercise
- A braking exercise
- An on road drive (up to 60 minutes)
- A coupling/uncoupling exercise
Training is tailored to individuals’ requirements and abilities and will be as time and cost affective as possible. Specially prepared and fully insured vehicles and trailers are supplied.
We have the ability to book tests in advance so therefore all arrangements will be made on your behalf.
